The capacity of an electric car’s lithium-ion battery, or the quantity of electricity it can store, is the single most important factor that determines the driving range of an electric vehicle. It is equal to the size of the gasoline tank in combustion-powered vehicles; it determines the energy reserves accessible to the motor and other components of the vehicle. This quantity is expressed in kWh, which stands for kilowatt hours. Therefore, the remaining range of the electric vehicle is determined by the amount of energy in the battery at any given moment.

To determine how towing a 10,000-pound trailer will impact the performance of an electric vehicle, Ford put the F-150 Lightning through its paces in two locations with harsh weather conditions: the Gauntlet pass in Colorado and the Davis Dam. The Colorado Gauntlet is a challenging trail that is eight miles long and climbs at an average grade of 7 percent up to 11,158 feet above sea level. How Quickly Does the Ford F-150 Lightning Charge Its Batteries?
In an ideal world, every Lightning owner will have access to 240-volt charging at their house or their place of employment, where they can plug in and take care of most of their charging needs while they are sleeping or working. However, if you do not have easy access to one of these Level 2 charging stations, or if you find that you need to refuel while you are on a lengthy road trip, you may find that you need to rely on DC fast-charging stations, which are also referred to as Level 3 stations. We used an Electrify America fast-charging station to bring a 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning Platinum from 5 percent to 90 percent charge, and then we converted the amount of energy given into miles of driving range at highway speeds. This allowed us to determine how long you will be waiting.
After 15 minutes of charging, the Lightning gained an additional 74 miles, bringing its total range to 133 miles after 30 minutes. The Lightning had added 189 miles of range after 45 minutes of charging, and after an hour of charging, the electric vehicle had acquired 214 miles of range. The charging time was measured in minutes.
To preserve the life of the battery pack in electric vehicles, the charging process gradually slows down as the battery gets full. At seven minutes into the charging process, the Lightning takes its first step down, reaching a steady state of approximately 115 kW output power. As the charge gets closer to 80 percent, there is a hug drop in the amount of power delivered. This is the moment when the majority of drivers would disconnect their devices and continue driving.
It is often quicker to jump from one fast-charging station to another fast-charging station without ever reaching an 80 percent charge while you are on the road if you are in an area that has a fair amount of charging possibilities.
F-150 Lightning packages and their corresponding standard characteristics
